Venus Booty Twerk

This a video piece questioning the definition of fine art. The video consists of various video compilations of women twerking while their faces are covered by the faces of women in historical paintings. Twerking is viewed as low grade mainstream culture that is usually incorporated in African American, or Hispanic communities. By putting in the faces of ‘Mona Lisa’, ‘The Girl with Pearl Earring’, ‘Venus’ and ‘Madonna’, it asks the questions of whether now that the faces are covered with historical paintings of women, can it be viewed as a fine art. It also brings up the question of race as well since all of the women in the paintings are white Europeans while the women who are twerking are of African American or Hispanic. What can be defined as fine art is an ongoing question that I would like to continue to explore.
